Colorectal cancers arise from stem cells, located near the base of intestinal and colonic crypts. Only a few cells however, within the tumors, are stem cells. Identifying gut stem cells is difficult, because no definitive intestinal stem cell markers are known. We have identified a putative stem cell marker which is expressed in post-mitotic neurons, that was recently isolated from small intestinal and gastric epithelial progenitor populations.
