OU Honors Inventors
Two OU inventors, Daniel Resasco and Jeffrey Harwell, have been recognized by the university for patents issued to them in 2005. All three of the patents have been licensed to SouthWest NanoTechnologies Inc., an OU spin-off company for which Resasco serves as chief scientist.
Resasco’s patents are "Process and Apparatus for Producing Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes” and “Method and Apparatus for Producing Carbon Nanotubes.” The third patent, “Metallic Catalytic Particle for Producing Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes” was issued to Resasco and Harwell.
Several other OU inventors have been honored with distinguished professorships and awards.
OU President David L. Boren

John E. Fagan has been recognized with a David Ross Boyd Professorship, for his superior leadership and teaching. The professorship, established in 1945 and named in honor of OU’s first president, carries a lifetime title as well as a one-time award of $7,000 and a permanent salary increase of $7,000 starting in the subsequent fiscal year.
Fagan has developed one of the world’s most prominent research programs on flight navigation systems and has brought in more than $27 million in external research funding to the university.
Brian P. Grady is a member of OU’s class of 2006 Presidential Professors. The Presidential Professorship recognizes the very highest standards of excellence. As a President’s Associates Presidential Professor, Grady will receive an annual stipend of $10,000 for four years.
Charles Mankin (geology and geophysics) has been named a Regents’ Professor, which recognizes exceptional distinction in research, service or teaching. Regents’ Professorships are accompanied by a one-time award of $7,000 and a permanent annual salary increase of $7,000 starting in the subsequent fiscal year.
Maricel Marquez (chemical engineering) has been recognized by her peers with the Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant award.
McCann (left) and OU
President Boren
Patrick McCann has been awarded a George Lynn Cross Research Professorship. The professorship was first awarded in 1944 to recognize substantial contributions to knowledge or creative activity. The professorship, which honors OU’s seventh president, carries a lifetime title, one-time award of $7,000 and permanent salary increase of $7,000 starting in the subsequent fiscal year.
Internationally known for his research in photonic materials and devices and chemical sensing using laser spectroscopy, McCann has made an impressive contribution to technology transfer and economic development. Ekips Technologies Inc. , an OU spin-off company, was created around McCann’s technology that has resulted in the Breathmeter, a device that can easily and quickly diagnose and monitor asthmatic conditions in people of all ages.
Yun Wang has received the Regents’ Awards for Superior Research and Creative Activity. Wang’s work in dark energy is strongly influencing the way astronomers think about the Joint Dark Energy Mission, a space telescope that will provide the means to probe dark energy.
