The Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $375,000 grant to the University of Oklahoma for nanotechnology research.
Researchers will study accumulation and release of manufactured nanomaterials in the soil and their interaction with air, water and minerals.
In a press release, EPA officials said they want Americans to benefit from the new technology while ensuring that human health and the environment are protected.
The award is one of 14 totaling $5 million to universities to investigate potential health and environmental effects of manufactured nanomaterials.
Nanomaterials are created by working at the molecular level, atom by atom, and range in size from one to 100 nanometers. A nanometer is 80,000 times smaller than a human hair.
